The equinox has come and gone, and there’s definitely a change in the weather. Our thoughts naturally turn more towards being indoors than outdoors as the light hours grow shorter, and after months of throwing open the windows, eating outside and making the most of every sunny evening, the time is coming for us to move back indoors and make our spaces feel warm, comfortable and welcoming again.
This is the beginning of cosy season, and every year it’s a lovely opportunity to refresh your home with small touches that make it your favourite place to be as the seasons change. We’re also looking ahead to the cosiest season of all – Christmas time – and the events we’ve got lined up between now and then for discovering those perfect gifts for your loved ones.
Before you begin, look around each room. Pack away the pieces that feel summery, clear your surfaces and keep only the items that make you smile. Reusing what you own is a wonderful way to refresh your home without creating unnecessary waste. Move a favourite vase to a new spot, layer existing cushions with a new throw, or gather treasured objects together on a tray. These small changes help your home décor feel handpicked rather than cluttered, and leave space for beautiful new finds with a story behind them.
One of the easiest ways to create a cosy atmosphere is to add texture. Drape a beautiful throw over the arm of a sofa, fold one at the end of a bed, or keep one nearby in the sitting room as the cooler evenings come along. Soft fabrics instantly make a room feel more inviting, and adding or changing the colour of your soft furnishings like cushions can help you mark that transition from summer into autumn.
Choose shades that feel cosy but also complement your existing surroundings, such as warm neutrals, soft greens, deep berry tones or earthy rusts. A carefully chosen throw can bring everything together and give a familiar space a fresh seasonal feel.
As the evenings draw in, candles can change the mood of a room in moments. Place a scented candle on a coffee table, mantelpiece or shelf, and let its gentle glow make your room feel calm and welcoming. Fragrance is just as important as appearance: choose uplifting floral or citrus notes for early autumn, or warm scents such as amber, honey, orange and winter spice as the season goes on.

Candles make wonderful additions to your own home as the seasons change, and are lovely gifts for someone who enjoys creating a relaxing atmosphere. Remember to burn candles safely and never leave them unattended, and make sure the scents are safe for any pets you have in the home as well. We also collect any and all used candles for recycling with our partners, so bring them along to one of our concessions or events when they’ve burnt down.
Cosiness is about surrounding yourself with things that bring joy and tell a story, as well as making your environment warmer to match the season. Handmade and ethically sourced homeware can add colour, character and a sense of connection to your rooms. Look for useful pieces that are also beautiful, whether a decorative ornament, a colourful pot stake or a small accent that catches the eye.
A felt flower garland is a simple way to add playful colour and texture. Hang one across a shelf, around a mirror, above a fireplace or along a dining table. Just Luv It’s handmade felt garlands are made by Fair Trade artisans and are available in a range of colours, so you can choose something subtle or embrace a brighter look. Explore the candles, homeware and garlands available in our Just Luv It shop, and create a cosy, welcoming space filled with things you truly love.
